Research Interests
Dr. Seung-Kyum Choi joined the Woodruff School in 2006 as an assistant professor. Dr. Choi's research interests include structural reliability, probabilistic mechanics, statistical approaches to the design of structural systems, multidisciplinary design optimization, and the decision support process for complex engineered systems. At Georgia Tech, he has conducted a challenging research effort to quantify uncertainty for the analytical certification of aerospace and underwater vehicles. The results of this effort include the development of state-of-the-art numerical techniques in statistical methods, as well as structural analysis methods that incorporate innovative uncertainty quantification techniques. Dr. Choi's current research focuses on developing robust simulation and decision-support tools that can help manage complex engineered systems that involve the design of material structures and multifunctional products. Dr. Choi is the principal author of a graduate level textbook (Reliability-Based Structural Design, Springer, 2007). This book presents the fundamentals and applications of structural reliability, stochastic finite element methods, reliability analysis via stochastic expansion, stochastic sampling methods, and optimization under uncertainty. He is a member of AIAA and a member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. He is a reviewer of the AIAA Journal, the ASME Journal, and the Journal of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization on the topics of uncertainty quantification and design optimization.
