Exam - March 3, 1995

1 - Some General Questions (35 points)

a) What are the two general goals of green design according to OTA? (3 points)

b) What are the differences between traditional environmental engineering, green design, and industrial ecology? (5 points)

c) Name at least ten incentives to do environmentally conscious design. (10 points)

d) What is the relationship between concurrent engineering and life-cycle design? (3 points)

e) Discuss the pros and cons of modularity in product designs. (5 points)

f) Explain what pre-consumer scrap, home scrap and post consumer scrap is. (6 points)

g) What are the definitions and differences in responsibilities for a small quantity generator and a generator? (3 points)

2 - Delta Airlines (25 points)

The Delta Airlines facility at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport is responsible for the major maintenance and repair of all aircraft owned by the company. Operations include mechanical and electrical system repair and overhaul, aircraft stripping and painting operations, electroplating of aircraft components, and jet engine maintenance and rebuilding. The facility has the equipment and systems to remanufacture almost all components of the aircraft operated by the company. A couple of processes are particularly noteworthy from a pollution point of view:

  • Every five years the paint coating on a jet is stripper and replaced. The stripping operation uses methylene chloride-based stripper and generates stripper waste and waste water containing residual stripper. All of the stripper wastes are sent off-site for disposal as a hazardous waste.
  • Delta drycleans seat covers in-house using perchloroethylene drycleaning equipment.
  • A modern plating operation is used to plate airplane parts with a variety of metals. Degreasing solvents and plating waste water treatment sludge are generated and disposed of as hazardous waste.

a) How would you find out whether perchloroethylene is a "good" or "bad" chemical to use? (2 points)

b) If you have multiple rinsing stations in the plating process, name at least one option to reduce the amount of water needed for rinsing without changing the number of rinsing stations. (3 points)

c) Perform a Pollution Prevention Assessment for the described paint stripping and replacement process. Follow EPA's PPA process. (20 points)

Problem 3 - Design for Demanufacture (32 points)

For each of the eight above situations;

a) explain why the situation is bad with respect to demanufacture and what the improvement made is, and

b) explain what the effect of the improvement is on manufacturability.

(4 points for each situation)
