SRL Ph.D. student Amit Jariwala and Post Doctoral Fellow Yong Yang win runner-up for the Social and Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2008 Business Plan Competition at Georgia Tech.

Amit S. Jariwala (Ph.D. student) and Dr. Yong Yang (Post Doc.) participated in the annual Business Plan Competition organized by the College of Management and won the runners up position for the Social and Environmental Sustainability Award. Their company (PuriTech) proposition was to develop next-generation artificial kidney(s) based on a revolutionary purification technology, in combination with micro-fabrication technology. Research on artificial kidney development is currently being pursued under the guidance of Dr. Rosen and Dr. David Ku.

PuriTech proposed that its products would significantly improve the quality of life of patients while substantially lowering the total cost of treatment. Preliminary research indicates that the successful application of this platform technology can lead to substantial savings of water and disposables.

The Competition witnessed participation from 29 teams, of which 19 semi-finalists were selected. PuriTech entered the semi-finals and won the runners-up position for Social and Environmental Sustainability Award. This award is a cash award presented to the venture team whose business plan best incorporates concepts of social and/or environmental sustainability.
